In the words of Dawn’s wise and venerable dad – there’s no Donny Osmond around here, we’re Cadillac all the way! So this weekend is Sydney’s birthday party. Yes, we know it’s like a good two weeks before her actual birthday. However, we’re having a pool party at the school and some of the people who were invited get all freaked out about the pool being cold enough to frost bite their kids once 1 November rolls around so we’re having it a few weeks early. The pool party is a pretty easy gig. You rent the pool and three life guards from the school, have pizza shipped in, and presto bango you’ve got yourself a party. Really all that was left for us to do was pull together some favor bags. Typically favor bags around here – which unfortunately seem to be a very steady requirement – tend to be full of dollar store junk that is immediately relegated to garage sale fodder. As we only have the 100fils store and can’t seem to pull off a garage sale we try to steer away from that type of thing and Anita does her best to be a bit creative with them. This year is no exception. Instead of the normal Oriental Trading Company bag filler Anita thought it would be a cool idea to fill a bag with some of Sydney’s favorite treats – good stuff to eat and no junk to stuff into that drawer afterwards.
So this summer she found some mermaid themed bags at a store back home and we bought them out, shipped them back home, and then started brain storming on how to fill them. First, the girl has a serious sweet tooth so we’ve got a small bag of candy you can’t find here – twizzlers, ring pops, pixie sticks, goldfish crackers (I know, not candy, but whatever), and other assorted yummies. We’re also doing two kinds of popcorn – cheddar and caramel – both of those are still in the works right now. Then I’ve made some of my rice crispy bricks – yeah, with enough of these puppies we could turn the empty lot behind the house into the Giza Plateau in no time. To top it all off Anita and I have made chocolate drizzled caramel apples. Now they’re not quite up to the scale of the Neiman Marcus Christmas candy apples but they are pretty impressive if we say so ourselves. I’m sure as we deploy for operation pool party that there will be plenty of pictures but we liked the apples and the rice crispy treats enough to snap a few pix along the way.
