For those of you who may not have noticed I’ve added a few little things to the site. Just some plugins that I found but I think they’re pretty cool. The first which was added months ago blocks spam comments (spam post). Its been very useful so it got me to thinking about what other plugins might be out there so a few weeks back I found another that tracks which posts on the site are the most popular – basically which ones are being clicked on, how often, from where, because of which searches, etc. It’s pretty neat and gives me some cool back end data but still doesn’t add much to the reader’s experience directly. So last month I found a counter plugin that will count down to a date or up from a date. That one is down at the bottom of every page and tells you exactly how long we’ve been over here. I swear we used to look at people who said they’d been here this long like they had a foot growing out of their forehead! Not to be stopped there I thought that while the usage data was cool to me that it might also be cool for you to see who’s visiting the site and from where. So now I’ve just installed a little plugin that maps all of the visitors. If you’ve ever logged in to leave a comment (and a few of you have) it will know who you are, otherwise you’ll just be a guess. It’s supposed to weed out the search-bots and only list actual clicks but we’ll see how well that works out. At the bottom of ever page you can see who’s online here now and then if you click the “Visitor Map” page or the “Map of Visitors” link at the bottom of every page you can see a really cool world map and a listing of who’s been here for the last 30 days. Now since I only get a few hundred hits a month and most of those of from our loyal friends and family I can’t imagine that this page will ever be too full but I still think it’s cool. Feel free to check it out yourself.
